York Neighbours

York Neighbours

We are a volunteer-led charity dedicated to tackling loneliness, reducing isolation and supporting the independence of people aged 65 and over living in York.

We deliver our work through three core services:

· Assisting with practical one-off jobs or errands

· Providing regular well-being phone calls

· Organising social outings

Our free services help reduce isolation and promote independence. Our ‘neighbours’ often tell us that our support helps them live independently for longer, feel less lonely and feel more connected to their community.

Now in our 10th year, we are keen to strengthen our links with the local community to raise awareness of our services. Alongside this, we are actively fundraising and always looking to recruit new volunteers to ensure these vital services continue for many years to come. We truly value any support and are very open to exploring collaborative opportunities.

We publish a quarterly newsletter for our neighbours, sharing updates from the charity alongside news, events and opportunities happening across York.

You can also find more on our website at https://yorkneighbours.org.uk/.

Heslington: A Nature Recovery Area

Heslington: A Nature Recovery Area

The Government has set a target to build back nature in a 25-Year-Plan. Every county in England will produce a Local Nature Recovery Strategy by 2025. North Yorkshire and York combined strategy is spear-headed by English Nature and includes local involvement at parish level. Parish Councils can declare themselves Nature Recovery Areas and follow a model pioneered by Harleston Town Council, to support local nature recovery projects within their community https://harleston-tc.gov.uk/na

What is our community doing already for Nature Recovery? Small actions, taken by residents and businesses, can make a difference when added together. Can we do more in Heslington by sharing ideas and giving practical support? Can you help us to celebrate Nature Recovery in our Parish by telling us about what you do?

We think the first step towards signing on as a Nature Recovery Area parish is to share what is already happening for Nature Recovery in Heslington Parish. The range is huge— from Heslington Tilmire Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) to exciting initiatives at Deramore School and those piles of wood or leaves left in your garden for hibernating creatures. Every little change makes an important contribution.

Tell us what you are doing towards Nature Recovery by contacting the Parish Council at HesIingtonPC@outlook.com, or speak to a Parish Councillor.

Active Travel Cycle Routes

Active Travel Cycle Routes

Active Travel Cycle Routes We understand that CYC are continuing to explore links from Wheldrake and Elvington across fields to create a cycle route using lanes southeast of Heslington and through the village, but this will not be in the first tranche of cycle route development owing to the cost of the proposed route. The relevant Sustrans feasibility report of July 2022 https://democracy.york.gov.uk/mgAi.aspx?ID=62826#mgD ocuments recommends a raft of alterations to lanes around Heslington Village and to traffic and parking management

within the village. These include reducing road width and a one way system. The Parish Council has raised a number of concerns about this route with CYC, with our Ward Councillor Keith Aspden and with our MP Julian Sturdy as previously reported. A route yet to be identified in detail between Campus West and Campus East will be actioned in Phase 1 of the Active Travel programme. The Parish Council has already raised concerns about changes to signage and loss of the footway on the west side of Field Lane, leaving only a narrow path on the east side for pedestrians and wheelchair users. We have been in correspondence with CYC officers requesting that Heslington PC be identified as a stakeholder for future consultations concerning Active Travel routes through Heslington Parish. HPC understand that CYC are continuing to explore links from Wheldrake and Elvington across fields to create a cycle route using lanes southeast of Heslington and through the village
